Every rhinoplasty is a custom procedure that refines and fashions your nose in
harmony with your facial structure for a more attractive facial balance.
WHAT IS A RHINOPLASTY?
The nose is one of the most important facial features. Even small imperfections can have a dramatic impact on your appearance, becoming a focal point that distracts from your other facial features. It is for this reason why so many men and women
choose a rhinoplasty (a nose job) to improve the appearance of the nose and to give it proportion in a complementary way that is harmonious with other facial features.
While most plastic surgery procedures are geared towards making patients look younger, better, or more refreshed, rhinoplasty has the potential to fundamentally improve a patient’s attractiveness. The reason is that most procedures focus on the soft tissue (skin and fat) and alleviate the signs of aging by smoothing skin, improving wrinkles, removing sagging, and improving complexion. Rhinoplasty addresses the underlying structure of the nose and improves the aesthetic balance and contour of the face, thereby affecting attractiveness.
WHY CONSIDER A RHINOPLASTY?
LARGE NOSE
While your nose brings character to your face, there can be too much of a good thing. If your nose is out of balance with your other features, it can be corrected by nose job surgeons and reshaped to create a more pleasing harmony in facial balance.
UNSIGHTLY NASAL TIP
Some people inherited features they don’t appreciate, such as a large, drooping, bulbous, or pinched nose tip. Rhinoplasty surgery can reshape the cartilage to create a more balanced and attractive profile.
LARGE HUMP
Depending upon the size and projection of a hump, whether created by bone, cartilage, or a combination, smoothing it can dramatically improve your overall appearance to enhance your features.
MISHAPED NOSTRILS
Many patients undergo rhinoplasty to correct over-wide, protruding, or long nostrils, or to resolve a unique nostril shape problem. The nostrils can be custom-altered so they better suit your face and are less prominent and visible.
Other Problems: Asymmetry, Concave Bridge, Crooked Nose
Although rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) is a popular procedure, it is also the most challenging cosmetic surgery to perform. Dr. Andrew Mather at Dr. Mather Cosmetic Surgery has extensive training and experience along with a reputation for performing this surgery with exquisite surgical technique. He performs rhinoplasty in Edmonton to improve the appearance of the nose, correct functional problems, and bring better balance and harmony to the facial structure and appearance.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE
FOR RHINOPLASTY?
RHINOPLASTY BEFORE AFTER
If you would like to modify the overall function or appearance of your nose and are in overall good health, you are likely a good candidate for rhinoplasty. You must have reached full maturity before undergoing rhinoplasty. The minimum age for rhinoplasty is usually 15 in girls and 16 in boys. It is also essential that patients are emotionally mature, understand the procedure and recovery, and can be active participants in ensuring recovery goes as it should.
THE CONSULT
A consultation for rhinoplasty will take approximately 1 hour. Because the nose is central to the face, Dr. Mather will perform a complete facial analysis as part of the decision making process. Important considerations include the size and shape of the nose, relative size compared to the length and width of the face, and the position of the nose relative to the eyes, chin, lip, and forehead. In addition, the structure of the nasal tip and the overall contour of the nose will be evaluated. An intranasal exam will be performed to examine the septum and other components of the nasal air passages.
There is also necessary evaluation of the chin during a rhinoplasty consultation. Because of the nose’s position on the face and its intimate relationship to the bony contour of the face, changes in the shape and projection of the nose go hand in hand with changes in the shape and projection of the chin. Although chin enhancement is not always necessary or mandatory, it should always be discussed so that the patient is well informed. The ultimate decision regarding chin procedures always resides with the patient.
he goal of the consultation is for you to obtain all the information you need to make an informed decision regarding rhinoplasty. Dr. Mather is dedicated to educating patients about the anticipated changes following rhinoplasty. As part of the consultation, we will help you with the decision making process and answer all of your questions. We pride ourselves on building a “partnership? with you, the patient, during the consultation. Often a second visit is required to review your pictures and to give you an idea of what your nose may look like following surgery.
Rhinoplasty
How does a structural rhinoplasty work?
A structural rhinoplasty addresses each of the structures that makes up the nose to individually improve each area. They are then brought back together in a more harmonious position to refine your nose naturally.
Can you achieve the same results with a non-surgical rhinoplasty?
No. While you can mask some of your complaints with your nose with a non-surgical rhinoplasty with the injection of hyaluronic acid filler. This process can fill in hollows to reduce the appearance of a hump but also makes the nose look larger.
At what age can I receive a nose job?
In order to undergo rhinoplasty, the nose must be finished with its growth. This typically happens at around 15 or 16 for girls and around 17 or 18 for boys. Teen clients must have parental consent, as well as a clear understanding of the procedure and its risks and a willingness to follow the doctor’s instructions before and after surgery.
Is a nose job painful?
Rhinoplasty discomfort will vary from patient to patient based on their personal pain threshold and the amount of work that is done. Any work that is performed on the septum or within the nose will result in some level of discomfort and congestion. Any work performed on the nasal bones will result in some pain, external bruising, and swelling. While a nose job remains one of the most in-demand and satisfying cosmetic procedures available, the majority of patients require prescription medication to help manage discomfort during the first week following surgery.
What if I Have Nasal Allergies? Will Rhinoplasty Affect Me?
If you have nasal allergies, get treatment in the months prior to your surgery. The surgery may lead to some benefits when the nasal passages are corrected during the procedure, as you will have healthier air flow.
Can I present my new nose to everyone the day after my nose surgery? If you have nasal allergies, get treatment in the months prior to your surgery. The surgery may lead to some benefits when the nasal passages are corrected during the procedure, as you will have healthier air flow.
Yes, but it won’t appear normal-sized. It will be bandaged, bruised, and swollen. After the tape is removed, the bruising may need another week to subside. The nose will continue to heal for the next month. In some cases of extensive reconstruction, the nose may require several months to attain the look desired. Don’t expect to be red-carpet ready for several weeks. The time will pass quickly, and a few months of healing is
nothing when compared to a lifetime of feeling embarrassed or unhappy, and suffering from a lack of self- confidence.
Recovery: What to expect
For the first week or so, the nose will be covered with bandages to protect your new nose shape. During this time, pain and swelling will be most conspicuous. Then, your surgeon will remove the cast about one week after surgery.
You will most likely have some bruising under your eyes for a week or two.
Your surgeon will give you detailed post-operative care instructions about your recovery. It’s important to follow these to have a quick, smooth recovery.
Most people are able to return to work and light activity after about three weeks – but it’s important to stay away from any heavy lifting, nose blowing, or activities that could damage your nose, such as contact sports.
After your nose is fully healed, it will take about a month to see some initial results. However, your final nose shape may not be completely visible until up to a year after surgery.
When will I be able to see the final results?
As the swelling from your surgical procedure subsides, you will begin to see the new shape of your nose appear. Healing happens gradually. The initial swelling will go down over approximately two to three weeks. Over the next nine to twelve months, you will see subtle, gradual changes until your results are fully visible. You will have long-lasting and arguably the best nose job Edmonton has to offer.
