Laser Skin Resurfacing

Introduction

Beautiful Skin Is Yours With Laser Skin Resurfacing

Your complexion is a reflection of your age and health. Over time, your skin can lose its youthful glow due to sun exposure and the natural aging process of your body. As a result, your facial skin may develop sun spots, fine lines, and lose that natural, healthy glow.

Skin resurfacing represents a fresh start, free from blemishes and pigmentation. Correcting skin damage through years of sun exposure, resurfacing targets the skin to improve its quality and appearance. Specifically, it can improve the appearance of fine lines, remove superficial blemishes, correct many pigment problems, and provide a smoother texture to the skin.

At Dr. Andrew Mather Facial Cosmetic Surgery in Edmonton, we utilize advanced resurfacing techniques designed to deliver noticeable, long-lasting results that appear natural and not overdone. Whether you’re dealing with fine wrinkles, uneven tone, or visible signs of aging, laser resurfacing can help restore a fresher, more confident version of you.

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Resurfacing strips away the outer layers of damaged skin and promotes collagen production, allowing the new skin to heal and reveal a smooth, tight, more uniform, blemish-free skin surface. Generally, the deeper the resurfacing treatment, the longer the recovery period; however, the results are generally better.

A wide range of resurfacing methods is available, utilizing various chemicals, lasers, or dermabrasion. Excellent results can be obtained using many of these methods.

The most common areas treated with resurfacing include the lower eyelids, smile lines, neck, “smoker lines,” and crêpe paper changes around the eyelids. Resurfacing can also be combined with other procedures, such as a facelift, to further enhance the results. Since a facelift does not address fine wrinkles in these areas, adding resurfacing will provide a more comprehensive overall result.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

If your skin has visible signs of aging, such as fine lines, sun damage, a rough texture, enlarged pores, or old acne scars, laser resurfacing may be the perfect solution. Ideal candidates are healthy adults with a desire to improve their skin’s tone and texture. This treatment is particularly beneficial for individuals seeking smoother skin without undergoing surgery. Dr. Mather evaluates each patient individually to ensure that the treatment is tailored to their specific needs, skin type, goals, and overall health.

What Are the Benefits of Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing is a safe and highly effective treatment specifically designed to treat various skin conditions. Patients can elect to treat several regions, including the face, neck, and chest. What to Expect on the Day of Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment

We’ll begin by gently cleansing your skin and applying a topical anesthetic to ensure you’re relaxed and comfortable throughout the treatment. Dr. Mather or a team member will then use a precision laser to target the outermost layers of skin, working carefully to remove damaged tissue and stimulate new collagen production underneath.

Once the session is complete, we’ll apply a cooling balm and post-care instructions to help soothe the skin and support healing. You’ll be sent home with a comprehensive aftercare plan and guidance on how to protect your skin during the healing process.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Recovery

Your recovery period is a vital part of your Fractional CO2 laser procedure, because it’s when your body heals itself and creates a brand new, glowing layer of skin. You can expect the recovery period to last approximately two weeks. Initially, you will experience swelling, but there is typically little pain associated with recovery.

You will experience redness and flakiness in the treatment area, and a scab will form over the newly exposed skin. This should be allowed to separate on its own, revealing the healed pink skin below. This typically takes 5-10 days; the severity of the injury determines the duration. This is completely normal and, in fact, how your body heals itself after the procedure to achieve a rejuvenated appearance. The new skin will be pink for several weeks to months until it returns to your natural skin colour. Once the skin is healed, camouflage makeup can be applied to cover the redness.

Most patients are able to return to work in 1 to 2 weeks. It is critically important to apply sunblock at all times until the redness is gone. If this is not done, blotchy, irregular skin pigmentation may result.
